Key Peninsula

The Key Peninsula is a 16-mile stretch of land in Pierce County, WA. Named after its key-like profile, the region is part of the Puget Sound estuarine area.

Known among locals as “The Key” or “The KP,” the Peninsula is home to almost 17,000 residents.   • Herron Island – Formerly known as Wednesday Island, Herron is a privately owned residential island just off the western edge of the Peninsula. It is only accessible by private ferry or boat.

  • Longbranch – Longbranch is a primary residential community located near the southern tip of the Key Peninsula. The area’s first ever hut was built here.
  • Vaughn – This community is named after the man responsible for the first land claim on the Key Peninsula, which dates back to 1852. Fittingly, Vaughn is home to the Key Peninsula Historical Society and Museum.
  • Wauna – Linking the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor, the residential community of Wauna marks the point where the entire land mass begins.

  • Historic Faraway Estate – Built in 1915, the Faraway Estate is a local icon nestled along the Filucy Bay waterfront. It was originally owned by Frank and Josephine McDermott, the founders of a well-known Seattle-based department store chain. The property, once a renowned venue for high-profile parties accessible only by boat, is currently being restored.
  • Gateway Park – Just launched in October 2017, Gateway Park is one of Key Peninsula’s newest attractions, adding new playgrounds, sports fields, and performance areas for residents to enjoy. The 72-acre-wide park is formed from a variety of properties previously owned by a few of the earliest settlers in the Peninsula. Gateway Park joins the Penrose Point State Park and the Joemma Beach State Park as the Key’s notable open spaces.
  • Key Peninsula Historical Museum – Located at the Civic Center in Vaughn, the facility is run by the Key Peninsula Historical Society as the central hub commemorating the area’s notable milestones. The museum is open to the public twice a week, free of admission. Individuals and groups may also book the facility for special tours and events.
